week three book blog

Week 3: April 18 - April 22, 2011

Week 3 RR? - Understanding my character(s)
(Be sure to include quote and page number!!)
You must use at LEAST 2 quotes from the book.
Understanding your character is a good way for you to really get into your book and see from another person's perspective. In your response this week, describe your character. Think about and discuss:
-1. your main character's personality
- 2. how they act/behave
- 3. what they look like
- 4. how old they are
- 5 what sort of education do you think that they have
- 6 who their friends and family are
- 7 what their financial (money) situation is
- 8 and what their job is (if they have one).

I'm reading a book called Sounder by William Armstrong. My main character is the boy. The boy acts like the man of the house because he's the one providing the food and cleaning. I got the description of him by the cover of the book because the author never says it. He looks like an educated kid because he has a book in his hand. He is a black kid with short hair. The boy is 13 or 14 because he has a dog, and all kids at the age of 13 or 14 want a dog because I'm 14 and I have a dog.

The boy was going to school but his mom told him to not go anymore on page 3 the boy's mom said "give it up child".... He has a mom, dad, and a dog named sounder. He has no friend because in the book it said on page 4 "every body would make fun of me because I would always be late to school", that makes me think he has no friends. The financial situation of the family is they are very poor because in the book it said "we have to hunt for food with Sounder helping us sniff out the prey." Right now the boy's job is to hunt for food and keep the family safe while  the dad is in jail.

  1. Andrew - you need to fix week 1 response. I do like how you described your poster in week 2, but remember to leave a space after a . ok?

  2. Andrew,

This is a well thought out response. I only see a couple punctuation errors (1st line in 2nd paragraph, and 2nd line). I like how you support your statements with both quotes and background knowledge. You are organized with your ideas.

    Grade: 7

Next Step: You touch on his personality but you don't really explain it. If he acts like the man of the house, what does that make him? Is he lazy, responsible, helpful, bossy? What. If he is able to hunt, does that support his age as well?

Try using another quote or two to support how you know his job and his actions or personality. Remember we were thoughtful with the Zombie response.

When you say his mom had him stop school, explain why. Is it to far away? Is his grade ever mentioned? Is it even important?

Don't be afraid to explain yourself.
